Because the Vinyl Banner Is Not Just About Aesthetics

Many individuals who order vinyl banners for their personal or professional use look at the aesthetic aspects without knowing the technical side. Their main concerns are the colors, text and graphics on the banners but not the weight, thickness and density of these items.

This should not be because the weight, thickness and density of a vinyl banner will significantly affect its durability, its functionality and even its beauty. Keep in mind that the quality of the vinyl on which the logo, text and slogans are printed on will affect their clarity of text and vibrancy of colors, too.

But first, let’s see why vinyl banners are popular than banners made from other materials like linen. It’s in the material – vinyl is waterproof so it can be placed indoors and outdoors; durable so it cannot be torn, stretched and damaged as easily as fabric; and flexible so it can be folded and stored easily, too.

Vinyl also takes well to various printing processes. The material retains the desired colors and patterns faster, easier and longer than other materials. You can hang vinyl banners for a couple of years yet these will look almost like new – almost because fading of colors to a certain extent can be expected especially when the banner is placed outdoors.

After you have decided on the colors, text and graphics of the vinyl banner, your next step is to determine its weight, thickness and density.

• Weight refers to the measurement in ounces on per square yard with the general rule being the higher the number, the heavier the vinyl and the more suitable it is for outdoor use. Thus, a 10-ounce vinyl is sufficient for indoor banners but outdoor banners require a minimum of 13 ounce in weight to withstand the natural elements.

• Thickness is measured in terms of mils. The general rule is that the larger the number, the thicker the vinyl. We suggest striking a balance between thickness for durability and thinness to prevent curling. The ideal thickness is 11-mil vinyl film but you can go lower or higher depending on your needs in a vinyl banner.

• Density is measured in denier. For outdoor applications, look for 1,000×1,000 denier because it is heavy-duty vinyl at this point.

When you know the technical aspects and balance these with the aesthetic aspect, then your vinyl banners will be the best.
